Learn to Sculpt.

A sculpture of a gopher made of Sculpey for a history museum.

First fashion an armature. In this case it is easily bendable iron wire. Apply aluminum foil to make a rough shape of the figure. Begin applying the Sculpey. Also shown is an armature for a smaller gopher and a finished gopher.
All the material is applied and the form begins to take shape. Finished details except for the fur, little tick marks are made to indicate the direction of the fur. The finished piece.

A small figure sculpture for a television commercial.

This is the concept sketch. The idea was to make a hood ornament that had the feeling of a woman in peril like but not recognizable as Fay Wray. After making an armature of flexible wire and applying clay, in this case Sculpey which I could easily bake in a home oven, this is the rough sculpture.

I looked at some examples of old figurative hood ornaments, easily found on the web at the auction sites. I found these at E-Bay.

The client wanted more feeling of motion in the clothes and hair. This is the sculpture in it's final form before baking. Sculpey is baked at a low temperature, after which it can be carved and sanded. Primed to show flaws more easily. Sanded and painted with bright metallic silver paint.
